Episode 34- Teen Talks: Mackenzie and Mom Lisa Embrace Alopecia

"When I look back at pictures of me with hair, I use it as an example saying that was me and I was happy with who I was then, and I'm happy with who I am now.  And whether you make a small change or a big change to yourself, I think no matter what the right people around you will be happy about it, and I think that's all that really matters.  Because that's when you really find your real friends.  When a big change happens in your life, that's when you find who the right people are."

On this episode of Alopecia Connection, Frank and Tommy welcome 15 year old Mackenzie, and her mother Lisa.  As you'll hear, Mackenzie is one of the most inspirational young people in the alopecia community.  Right from the beginning of her journey, Mackenzie and Lisa have promoted positivity and awareness of this condition by making and distributing over 3,000 silicone "Mackenzie Strong" alopecia awareness bracelets.  Despite having alopecia for a relatively short time, Mackenzie has already become an active role model for younger people with alopecia in her area.

FUN FACT: Mackenzie is great friends with Austin, who appeared on Alopecia Connection Episode 26.

During this interview, Lisa discusses several organizations and groups that helped her as a parent of a child with alopecia.  These organizations included the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and the Children's Alopecia Project (CAP).  The Facebook groups that Lisa found particuarly helpful were Parents of Children with Alopecia Areata, and Children with Alopecia.
